Market Collective in #YYC Needs Your Help! Speak up for Pop-Ups, Handmade Artisans & Public Transit Use

If you live in Calgary and like all things crafty, then chances are you have been to Market Collective, located in the Ant Hill building in the Kensington District.

Market Collective is a personal favourite of ours as well and ACA artists often visit from Edmonton – either as a vendor or a customer. It’s a fantastic set up – live music, indie artisans and a whack of people coming out to shop local.

This week Market Collective received a notice that a decision has been made by the Calgary Parking Authority and Kensington Calgary to cancel 2 of the 3 MC weekends that they have planned for December 2012.

Here is their statement:

This week a decision has been made by the Calgary Parking Authority to limit the use of the MC at the Ant Hill Space.  We were given permission to run Market Collective for three dates in December, but because of complaints from the Kensington Business Revitalization Zone, the CPA has asked us to choose one date to operate. Given the last minute nature of this decision, we have decided that we are going to stand up against this and push to have this decision changed.

We have different artists, musicians, and community organizations lined up for each weekend, and feel that it is unacceptable to have to cancel two weekends. Not only is Market Collective a community event, but we also take very seriously the role of community development and are a strong advocate for artists, musicians and community organizations. We have approximately 200 artists who have invested their time, energy and resources into preparing their work for December, and it is very important to us to provide the space for them to sell their work in December. Furthermore, Calgary has been named Cultural Capital of the Year for 2012, and it would be great to go out of the year with a celebration of the arts, not the suppression of them.

Remember to be respectful. We want to treat this with an attitude of growth and change rather that anger and resentment.

Here is what we think:

  • Market Collective is a business who has chosen this location because it is good for their customers but also for the community bringing thousands of shoppers who eat and shop at other Kensington stores and restaurants while in the area.
  • One store can not complain about another store stealing its business. If it is losing business to another store they need to look within to figure out why people are not shopping there.
  • Market Collective is not a competitor for any other business on that street. Vendors are unique and provide a very distinct product that compliments the Kensington District but does not compete.
  • The fact Calgary could turn down an opportunity to promote neighbourhood vitality is absolutely ridiculous. Economic prosperity is vital to our communities and Market Collective not only allows small businesses to get into their community but it brings new traffic to the Kensington Area.
  • If parking is an issue, why is the city not enabling park ‘n’ shop alternative with public transit. A great way to partner with a local initiative as well as provide a solution. Why is the initial solution to stamp it out instead of finding a way to make it grow?
  • Kensington Business Revitalization Zone should talk to our BRZ’s in Edmonton who full support our pop ups as a way to keep neighbourhoods thriving.

How can you help? Speak up and speak up with solutions not just complaints. Send it even if you are not from Calgary. This is an important issue and we need to set a precedence before this misunderstanding happens elsewhere.
