You may have heard of the latest shopping and eating trend – Pop Ups. These temporary sales and dining spots offer a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it opportunity for unique experiences.
This isn’t a new concept – some of the large retailers have been creating these one-off sale events for decades – primarily to promote new lines or offer a sample of the shopping experience in districts where people might not travel to get to their store.
But here in Alberta, we are seeing the trend come alive offering local small business owners to showcase their clothing designs, sandwich recipes and seasonal gift options.
As a crafter or handmade artisan, the pros are:
- Inexpensive way to get into your community. Meet new people and network to encourage further sales online or custom one-on-one sales.
- Meet other crafters in your neighbourhood that you can use to leverage future sale events or promotional opportunities
- Make sales without worrying about the mailing costs
As a shopper, the pros are:
- Opportunity to shop local while discovering unique, one-of-a-kind clothing, jewelry and goodies
- Support small businesses
- Great deals on items without a high store markup
Will you and your handmade business be popping up in the community? As a shopper would you support local pop-up businesses in Alberta?

Hi, I am wondering if these pop up markets are still happening. I am a photographer that is looking at different ways of introducing my photographic art to the Edmonton community. Please let me know if it is still happening and what the cost would be and when the next venue will happen and where.
Thanks in advance.
